It all started when Jeff was in college. One espresso... then another... then another. He realized that all of those coffee grounds were just being thrown in the garbage. He found out that the used coffee grounds (or espresso grounds in this case) actually make an excellent fertilizer for plants.
“Big deal” he thought. “So coffee grounds could be saved from going in landfills.” Jeff then took this idea to his Entrepreneurship class at the University of Cincinnati and ended up winning the “New Venture Plan” Competition in 2006. After having moved to Atlanta and becoming a board member for a “Green” organization in Atlanta, Jeff met Matt and began to see how important it was to reduce the size of our landfills. He realized that his little idea for coffee grounds could help serve a dual purpose: producing a rich, natural fertilizer for home gardeners and help do their part to protect the environment.
Jeff and Matt began doing some more research on the idea and found that coffee grounds make a great fertilizer for plants when mixed together with the optimal amount of other natural products. After making connections with some equally “eco-minded” people, they began to produce a product that is known today as JavaSoil.
